Learn more about his career in the environmental sector:
Before entering the environmental world of legal applications and licensing, I served as an active member of the Honorary Rangers of South Africa’s National Parks Board. My main task was education, especially at schools, during chat shows, and through evening talks in the Kruger National Park’s different camps.
Around 1992/3, the need to settle down and be more homebound encouraged me to start my own company and provide services in the fields of environmental applications and public participation.
Over the years, my field of service has expanded to include not only Environmental Impact Assessments, but also Water Use Licensing, Waste License Applications, Air Emissions Licensing, Rectification Applications, Legal Opinions, and general environmental work.
I decided early in my career that I would not get involved in mining and mining applications, as I could not justify my views on mining with my need to play an active role in environmental preservation.
Today, 32 years later, I still serve the environmental world through environmental authorisations, always trying to find the balance between human needs and environmental preservation.

Sustainability and its parameters, as put forward since the 1980s, have changed. We live in a world where a lot has changed. In South Africa, we saw a wide-ranging change in the political sphere when the rights of the individual were enshrined in a new constitution. Former landless and property-deprived citizens were now allowed to gain access to the property market. This also led to many new entrants into the business world and the farming fraternity.
We see the taking of hands—people coming together and new partnerships forming—in, among others, the farming community. In terms of sustainability, we have reached a point where resilience has become key in adapting to sustainability. We need to learn new concepts and develop beyond the old ways to provide a future for the next generations.
In the environmental world, resilience refers to the ability of an ecosystem or social-ecological system to withstand disturbances and maintain its essential functions and structure. It encompasses the capacity to absorb changes, as well as reorganise and adapt to new conditions, while still retaining core characteristics. Essentially, it’s about bouncing back from challenges and continuing to function effectively in the face of change.
